3-2-1 backup checker

List where you keep copies of the data you would hate to lose, and see whether your setup meets the 3-2-1 backup rule (3 copies, 2 kinds of storage, 1 offsite) and the stricter 3-2-1-1-0 (plus 1 offline or immutable copy and 0 errors in a test restore), with the single change that would help most.

Your copies of the data you would hate to lose. The first row is the original.

Original

Does not meet 3-2-1 yet

  • ✗ 3 copies: you have 2
  • ✓ 2 kinds of storage: you have 2 (internal drive, cloud)
  • ✓ 1 copy offsite: you have 1
  • ✗ 1 copy offline or immutable: you have 0
  • ✗ 0 errors: 0 of 1 backups restore-tested

The one change that helps most: Add an external drive at home: it is a third copy and a second kind of storage in one.

A sync folder copies every change, including deletions and files ransomware has encrypted, to every device within seconds. It only counts as a backup if the service keeps old versions you can restore (OneDrive, Google Drive, Dropbox and iCloud Drive each keep them for a limited time).

How it works

The original counts as one of the three copies, as the rule intends. Kinds of storage are grouped (internal drive, external drive, flash, network storage, cloud, tape or disc), offsite means another building or the cloud, and an external drive or USB stick counts as offline only because you unplug it between backups. Everything stays in your browser. For the reasoning behind each number, read the 3-2-1 backup rule, explained.
